GMCA Digital
By Adam Sundle, Management Trainee, Greater Manchester Combined Authority
In January 2024, I joined the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as a policy officer apprentice. Although I had a long-term interest in working in politics, policy, and central or local government, this was my first job in the sector, so I wasn't entirely sure what the day-to-day role would entail.
Throughout the 2-year apprenticeship, I will complete three placements: Procurement, Digital Policy, and Economy.
Having completed my placement in Procurement, I am currently in Digital Policy. Both placements have given me a comprehensive overview of these departments as well as the wider organization. I've learned how crucial these sectors are in policy and how they play an intrinsic role in driving change across all areas. During my time in Procurement and the Digital team, I have collaborated on projects in various departments, including Environment, Education, Work & Skills, Strategy, and Transport.
My training ensures that I develop key skills and behaviours throughout each placement, providing me with a wide range of experiences and opportunities.
Working in Digital Policy, I've been involved in projects such as 5G and decarbonization, innovation, AI, digital skills, and inclusion. During my time with the digital team, I've gained insights into issues I never realized were so prevalent. For instance, I had no idea how many people are digitally excluded in Greater Manchester. This experience has also deepened my understanding of the digital sector's role in addressing other issues like sustainability and the environment.
The main aspect I enjoy about the apprenticeship is the ‘learning by doing’ approach. While I have gained valuable knowledge through the academic route, I prefer having the opportunity to put theory into practice, which is a key feature of this apprenticeship. The teams I have worked with understand that I am entering a brand-new sector and have been very supportive, encouraging me to ask questions.
As part of my apprenticeship, I will be undertaking a research project focused on the challenges that SMEs face in adopting AI. This is a topic I had never considered before starting the apprenticeship, but now it excites me. The opportunity to jump straight into the sector and learn on the job has made this possible, and I’m looking forward to taking on further opportunities as I continue to progress in this space.
To others considering a career within similar sectors, I highly recommend pursuing an apprenticeship. It's an incredible way to gain hands-on experience, develop key skills, and make a meaningful impact in your chosen field. The support and opportunities I've received have been invaluable, and I encourage others to explore this educational path as a stepping stone to a rewarding and fulfilling career.
