How technology is opening doors for young people and social enterprises

By Anita Zarska, Director of Inclusive Bytes.

As we celebrate Digitober, our team at Inclusive Bytes is reflecting on how technology is reshaping lives on multiple levels. Our mission as a social enterprise goes beyond teaching tech skills—it’s about creating real impact by using technology as a catalyst for change.

Our model is built on a system of empowerment. We connect young people eager to apply their tech skills with social enterprises who are keen to make better use of technology. Backed by our experienced tech team, students gain real-world experience working on impactful projects that benefit grassroots organisations, creating a ripple effect of positive change across education and community development.

Hands-On Learning: Building the Future

From assembling 3D printers to coding with Microbits, we provide young people with hands-on experience in technology. These projects teach critical skills like problem-solving and teamwork while showing them that the future is something they can actively build.  By creating tools themselves, students bridge the gap between theory and practice, connecting classroom learning with real-world applications. By unlocking this “black box,” they gain a deeper understanding of how technology works, transforming abstract concepts into tangible solutions.

Open Source: Accelerating Learning

We introduce students and social enterprises to the power of open-source software, breaking down barriers of cost and access to technology. Using free or easily accessible tools, both students and organisations can continue learning, collaborating, and expanding their capabilities independently. Open-source platforms also foster a spirit of community, where innovation and knowledge-sharing create sustainable progress for the long term.

Real-World Experience with Social Enterprises

One of the most unique aspects of our program is the opportunity for young people to work on real projects with real impact. Through partnerships with social enterprises, students gain invaluable work experience, using their tech skills to create solutions that help these organisations thrive and better serve their communities. In return, students interact directly with social enterprise leaders, gaining insights into how technology drives social change. This real-time feedback loop allows them to iterate and improve their work, making the experience more relevant and impactful.

Building a Future Powered by Positive Change

Through Digitober and beyond, we’re committed to empowering the next generation while supporting social enterprises. Together, we’re building a future where technology is not just a tool for growth but a driver of positive social change. By giving young people the opportunity to explore tech through hands-on projects and real-world work experience, we’re equipping them to make lasting contributions to the world.
